Across the hedge she can see the shack her poor neighbors live in. Then she sees her friend, Rosario, accompanied by Chepe, Rosario’s brother, stealing the tricycle from the hedge and hiding it near their shack. Confused and hurt, Margarita does not confront her friend, choosing instead to lie to her mother about how she lost the tricycle out of fear for Rosario’s safety and, perhaps, out of guilt over her own complicity.
