In a future period known as Home Time, humans have the ability to travel to any point in the past-but they must abide by strict rules so as not to compromise the future. When a top government official is found dead in the Himalayas in 5000 BC, Operative Rico Garron is convinced that someone has broken the rules and committed murder. His investigation leads him through history-from seventeenth-century France to "the Dark Ages" of the early twenty-first century, where he discovers a plot that threatens the very stream of time.
Summary The man who discovered time travel, Jean Morbern, accidentally created new time streams with his first experiments, all of which rejoin at the Home Time. Morbern established the College, the Code, and the Register to control time transference and ensure that no one can abuse it to influence the past. But the College can and does send correspondents upstream (into the various pasts) to further human knowledge. Powerful figures in the Home Time would like to overthrow the College’s monopoly on time transference and set up a new Home Time more advantageous to themselves, and the only one who seems to have noticed is low-level Field Op Garron, a known troublemaker.
