Summary Calepino meets Mara and her son, Tomi, on board a slave ship. They ask Calepino to help them escape; Calepino says it is impossible. Dr. López asks Calepino to assist in the leper colony. Calepino is repulsed at first but finds working with and learning from Dr. López deeply satisfying. One day, Calepino sees Tomi on the street and learns that Tomi’s new owner is abusive. Calepino helps Mara and Tomi fake a leprosy infection and the two are transferred to the leper colony. Soon after, inquisitors imprison Dr. López on the charge of practicing Judaism. Calepino, Father Pedro, and Doña Isabel create a petition praising the doctor’s good works and fabricating a description of his devotion to the Church, sparing the doctor’s life.
