Michael switched schools because he was viciously bullied; now he can't quite believe that he's found such a good friend in Francis. Together, they spend hours creating an imaginary world called Evgard, where a cruel duke oppresses the weak tribes that live in the swamps around his walled city. Michael is adamant that no one find out about Evgard-he is terrified that if anyone does, the bullying will begin again. When Michael receives notes in his locker telling him that the secret is out, he becomes convinced that Francis has betrayed him.
Summary Still reeling from having been bullied at his old school, Michael is happy to have a friend at St. Anselm’s, especially one who shares his enthusiasm about Evgard. He and Francis spend their weekends embellishing this imaginary realm, drawing maps and adding details. When Michael finds a note in his locker indicating that someone else knows about this secret world, he assumes that Francis has betrayed him and has been laughing at him all along. Angry and hurt, Michael retreats into Evgard, where a boy named Argent has been captured and enslaved by the cruel Duke. Columen, the Duke’s son, shows Argent kindness and respect, and the two become friends. Two stories unravel side by side, one in the real world and one in Evgard, and, as Michael and Argent’s problems become more complex and dangerous, they must both make a difficult choice: whether to remain loyal to a friend . . . or become a traitor.
