Michael wants nothing more than to be Sir Michael. But the knighthood has been dead for two hundred years, his squire is a rogue named Fisk, and his damsel in distress turns out to be an escaped murderess. As Michael says, "The life of a knight errant wasn't quite what I had expected." However, when Michael and Fisk set out on a quest involving angry sheriffs, cudgel-crewers, and magical beasts, the knight and his squire could finally live out their own legendary adventure-or die trying.
Summary Although Sir Michael’s demanding father would like to see his youngest son settled down as the steward of the family estate, the independent-minded knight has other ideas. He has spent the last year searching for adventure and trying to do good deeds, although most people laugh at him when he introduces himself as a knight errant. Fisk, a con artist with a cache of useful skills and a mysterious past, finds himself bound to serve Sir Michael and bristles at his new employer’s high ideals and naïveté. When they discover that the damsel in distress that they have just rescued from a tower is actually a murderess accused of poisoning her husband, they are duty-bound to find the lady and bring her to justice. In alternating chapters the two describe their quest to solve the mystery surrounding Sir Herbert’s death, the numerous challenges testing each man’s abilities and character, and their growing friendship.
