Summary The untimely death of his father leaves Hugo with nothing but his clockmaker’s skills and a mechanical man—a magician’s automaton—that his father had found and was trying to repair. Now Hugo lives with his cruel uncle in a secret room inside the walls of the train station, keeping the clocks running while his uncle disappears for ever-longer stretches. Anything Hugo wants he must steal, including the cogs and wheels needed to repair the automaton. When the old toymaker catches Hugo in his theft, each begins to learn the other’s secrets as their lives become more intertwined.
