In 1908, when long distance automobile races were all the rage, the New York Times and Paris's Le Matin cosponsored a race from New York to San Francisco and from Siberia to Paris. Teams from France, Germany, Italy, and the United States competed. They were beset by breakdowns, mud, snow, fog, a sandstorm, "Chinese brigands, well mounted and armed," the Parisian police (who almost arrested the Americans for driving with a broken headlight), and, according to one report, a pack of "not less than fifty wolves." There were six official entries: three cars from France, and one each from Germany, Italy, and the United States. They left from Times Square on February 11, 1908, and were soon beset by snow, bad roads, and breakdowns. When teams reached the West Coast, there was some confusion as to what to do next. Some cars were shipped directly to Vladivostock; others went by way of Japan. The racers followed the Trans-Siberian Railway as far as they could, often helped by locals and always on the lookout for bandits.
