In 1908, when long distance automobile races were all the rage, the New York Times and Paris's Le Matin cosponsored a race from New York to San Francisco and from Siberia to Paris. Teams from France, Germany, Italy, and the United States competed. They were beset by breakdowns, mud, snow, fog, a sandstorm, "Chinese brigands, well mounted and armed," the Parisian police (who almost arrested the Americans for driving with a broken headlight), and, according to one report, a pack of "not less than fifty wolves." Bibliography. Index of quotes. Black-andwhite photographs.
