"John Ford Kang. She was finally going to talk to him." Joyce is determined to impress her crush, but when she gathers the courage to actually speak to him, he confuses her with another Korean girl, whom Joyce considers "the ugliest girl in school." Joyce is devastated, especially when she discovers John has a crush on her beautiful older sister, Helen. Then her aunt offers to pay for cosmetic eyelid surgery. "You will never be as pretty as your sister," her aunt says, "but with my doctor's help, you can look very nice."
Summary It’s the summer before senior year, and Joyce plans to transform herself from a plain, not very noticeable girl into a stylish, sexy individual who will catch the eye of her incredibly cute crush, John Ford Kang. Feeling constantly eclipsed by her seemingly perfect older sister, Helen, the family’s shining star, Joyce wants to finally stand out on her own merits. Then, her aunt wins the lottery and offers to pay for Joyce to have cosmetic surgery that will make her eyes look bigger. Her best friend Gina thinks it’s a no-brainer, but Joyce isn’t sure. As she struggles with the decision of whether or not to go forward with the procedure, Joyce also wrestles with questions of self-image and perceptions of beauty, discovering much about herself and her place in her family.
