The Darkest Evening

The Depression is ongoing when Jake Maki’s family moves from Minnesota to a newly-formed Finnish immigrant community in Russia. Father believes that life will improve under Communism, but Jake is doubtful-their living quarters are cramped, mail is censored, and over time, the government becomes increasingly oppressive. When authorities arrest Jake’s brother and father, Jake, his mother, and his younger sister must flee to safety. Historical note.
