Adrift at sea with depleted rations, Tom Tin and his crew-all escaped teenage convicts-are relieved to board an abandoned ship. Though wary, the boys take two marooned men, Mr. Beezley and Mr. Moyle, on board. Beezley and Moyle quickly commandeer the ship, sail to the Caribbean, and try to sell Tom and his mates as slaves. But a deadly confrontation allows Tom and his surviving companions to flee for England. Home provides no comforts, though, as Tom finds himself beset by fearsome enemies and a terrible curse. Library edition with trade jacket added.
Summary Having made their escape from a convict ship headed to Australia, Tom and four other boys are adrift on a ragtag steamboat, lost and out of fuel. Tom wants only to return to England and find a way to rescue his father, who has been taken by cannibals in the South Seas. Once in London, he will recover the Jolly Stone, a valuable diamond that comes with a deadly curse, and give it to Mr. Goodfellow, the wealthy scoundrel who has cruelly mistreated Tom and his father. When the boys come across a mysterious abandoned ship and pick up two castaways who know how to sail, they think their luck has finally changed for the better. However, Tom soon finds himself at sea in an adventure that exposes him to the horrors of slavery, hones his courage and resourcefulness, and tests the strength of his convictions.
