China, 1958: "Sparrows are our enemies! They eat too much grain. We must drive them from the land!" The Great Leader has declared war on sparrows, and the people of Ming-Li's village are joining in. With their cymbals and firecrackers, the villagers form a "noise parade" intended to frighten all the sparrows to death. Ming-Li cannot bear to watch the birds perish. She rescues as many sparrows as she can and hides them in the village barn, which is empty for the season. But soon the summer harvest will begin, and the farmers will discover her secret. Author's note. Full-color illustrations.
