Charlie Feehan began running the frigid Melbourne streets at night simply to keep warm. Soon, however, "the sleazy streets seduced me, and, like a moth to the flame I gladly surrendered." Now Charlie is an errand runner for notorious bootlegger Squizzy Taylor. The pay is good and the job is a thrill, but Charlie yearns to put his running skills to a different use: he wants to leave the criminal world behind and enter the prestigious Ballarat Mile race. Library edition with trade jacket added.
Summary Charlie has been running the city streets to stay warm since his father’s recent death. He is noticed by crime boss Squizzy Taylor, who offers him a job as a runner. Charlie’s mother and baby brother need the money, so Charlie accepts.Working for Squizzy seems to be easy money, but Charlie soon learns otherwise. First he is sent to collect a debt from the father of a girl he has admired from afar. Then Nostrils is savagely beaten helping Charlie run rum—and Squizzy cruelly ridicules and sacks Charlie when he pleads for revenge against the thugs who did it. Now freed from his life of crime, Charlie begins to train for the Ballarat Mile, with Mr. Redmond as his trainer. Using the money he has made working for Squizzy, Charlie hopes to parlay a win in the big race into a payday lucrative enough to ensure that his mother and brother will never be cold and hungry again.
