Summary Andrew dreams of going to America. When his father enlists him as a page to Raleigh, he gets his chance to go. First, though, he must prove his worth to Raleigh. Using the resourcefulness and skills his father instilled, and combining them with honesty and grace, Andrew fulfills commissions to obtain necessary documents for Raleigh. He is then appointed secretary to Harriot on a voyage of discovery to America. A disastrous landing on Roanoke results in a shortage of supplies, resulting in an unhappy dependence of the English upon the Indians. Andrew is a witness to the seemingly inevitable clash of cultures between the English, led by the heavy-handed Lane, and the Algonquins, led by the crafty Pemisapan.
