In their desolate and war-torn homeland, Giuliano and his friends must fend for themselves. As they move up the ranks from scavengers to petty thieves, Giuliano grows increasingly uncomfortable with his friends' proclivity for violence-yet he also feels a need to prove himself. When he, Christian, and Stefano are recruited into a militia, Giuliano feels that they've made a terrible mistake, but it may be too late to leave. Pen and watercolor graphics.
Summary The three boys have had to grow up quickly due to the war. They steal what they need and have no permanent homes. Danger is everywhere: snipers, bombs, gangs, and militias. When the boys go to sell some stolen goods, they encounter Felix, the leader of a criminal gang, who takes a liking to Killer. He takes Killer into the gang as a delivery and collection thug, with Christian and Giuliano as Killer’s helpers and hangers-on. Life is good for the boys—good food, new clothes—until they are jumped by a rival mafia gang. When Killer goes alone to take revenge and get back what has been stolen, the distance between him and the other two—especially Giuliano—further widens. Felix discovers that being in a militia is better business than simply running a gang, and he recruits the boys to join as well, but Giuliano has had enough and runs away, completely severing ties with the other two, who later come home as war criminals.
