Randoph's father was fired from his job at a general goods store for allegedly stealing a Barbie camper van and five bags of red licorice, among other things. While Randolph's father fights the dismissal, the family, short on money, takes in a tenant. Randolph isn't thrilled to have a stranger in the house, but then he discovers that Mr. Karp is a collector, too. Randolph collects beer bottle caps, writing instruments, and words. Mr. Karp's collection arrives in wooden crates marked "fragile" and "perishable"-words that make Randolph want to learn more. Black-and-white art.
Summary Having collected things all of his life, Randolph is proud of his carefully selected and diligently maintained assemblages of beer-bottle caps, writing instruments, and words. When Randolph’s father loses his job, the family decides to make ends meet by taking in a tenant. Apparently, Mr. Karp is also a collector, and Randolph is curious about the contents of the mysterious wooden crates that the man brings to the house. Though Mr. Karp mostly keeps to himself, the two gradually strike up a friendship, discussing the frustrations and joys of their shared passion. Mr. Karp proudly shows Randolph his collection: numerous glass containers filled with water samples taken from different locales and time periods—for example, from Jackie Robinson’s drinking bottle or Sarah Bernhardt’s bathtub. Mr. Karp’s entire world revolves around his collection, but something happens to change his outlook.
