"Gentlemen . . . this will be Laika's vessel! The first spacecraft . . . Sputnik II! There are still problems, but we'll solve them. Even on such a tight schedule!" "How will the satellite return to earth?" "It won't. . . . There is no return option." Here are the intertwined stories of Korolev, the driven engineer at the top of the Soviet space program; Yelena, the lab technician responsible for Laika's health; and Laika, an energetic, trusting, and beloved dog chosen for a journey she will not survive. Full-color illustrations. Afterword. Bibliography.
Summary Designer Sergei Korolev had been arrested and placed in the Soviet gulag system. He is then recalled to Moscow for his usefulness, though not fully pardoned until later. His vision and drive make possible the successes of the Soviet Sputnik program. Like Korolev, Kudryavka has a difficult early life, abused and finally abandoned as a puppy, then living as a street mongrel before being caught and placed into the pilot dog program. Dog handler Yelena Dubrovsky, who reminds the dog of its first loving owner, is forced to choose between her feelings for Kudryavka and her sense of duty.
