David Crandall was destined to attend The Arsenal, a strict private school. His father is the headmaster, and a long, successful line of David's relatives have graduated from the school. With his grades David is unlikely to follow their examples, but that's not his only problem. He's an outcast at school, he loses his spot on the rifle team to a girl, and he has barely spoken to his father since his mother died. Worst of all, David suspects his father of her murder.
Summary Nothing David does seems to satisfy his father. His only hope at redemption is to earn the title “First Shot” at graduation, but with Misty’s arrival, even that seems out of reach. David’s relations with his father have not been the same since David’s mother was murdered—especially because David suspects his father of the crime. David witnesses his father acting oddly one evening and begins to look for clues to his mother’s death. David and his friends dig up evidence which could point in several directions, further complicated by love triangles, large amounts of cash, and family ties.
