Summary Instead of attending school, Sherlock, who is fascinated by people, prefers to wander the neighborhoods of London, quietly observing those around him while mulling over his life. He loves and admires his parents, but is frustrated by the family’s desperate economic situation. His mother, once a wealthy socialite, was disowned when she married a poor Jewish student, and the couple struggles to survive. His prospects are further limited by the racial prejudice he faces daily. When he reads about a brutal murder, Sherlock becomes obsessed with bringing the perpetrator to justice. Putting his keen observation skills and perceptive mind to work, he begins an investigation that takes him into London’s underworld, tests his courage and fortitude, and threatens everything he holds dear.
