1942: Fourteen-year-old Nick Freestone is glad to leave war-torn London behind and return to his father's teak plantation in Burma, where he lived as a small child. There he meets Mya, an aspiring mahout whose family tends the plantation's elephants, and Hilltop, a mysterious monk. Then the Japanese army arrives. Nick becomes a prisoner in his own room, and his father is sent to a labor camp. With the help of Hilltop and a rogue elephant named Hannibal, Nick and Mya must escape and rescue their families.
Summary Bombs are falling on London, and Nick’s mother decides that he would be safer with his father at the family’s teak plantation in Burma. Although Nick was born at Hawk’s Nest, he’s been away for many years, and he can’t wait to spend time with his father and learn about the plantation and the powerful timber elephants that work there. However, Japanese soldiers invade the area soon after Nick’s arrival. His father is captured and sent to a prisoner of war camp, and Nick is held captive at Hawk’s Nest by a Japanese colonel. With the help of Hilltop and Mya, whose brother has also been taken prisoner, Nick plans a daring escape that involves traveling through the dense Burmese forest and risking their lives to rescue their loved ones.
