Summary Mella has always had “the touch” with dragons, and now that Gran has passed away, the girl is responsible for looking after the family’s herd. As a dragon keeper, she has always been fascinated by songs and legends about the gigantic wild dragons that once roamed the countryside, but no one believes that these creatures still exist. When a knight arrives at the inn searching for signs of a “true” dragon, Pa and the villagers scoff at the possibility that such a beast lurks nearby. However, Mella discovers that the legends are true when she finds a dragon egg in the forest and is entrusted with the task of bringing it to the Hatching Ground in the Dragontooth Mountains. Accompanied by Roger, the knight’s kindhearted squire, Mella sets out on a difficult quest fraught with both danger and wonder.
