The last thing Jared wants is a family of refugees living in his house, but his do-gooder mother has made up her mind to host a family from Africa. When the family arrives, they are not what anyone expects: the father has had his hands amputated, and the daughter is so traumatized by her experiences that she can't speak. Jared senses something else suspicious-these people do not seem to know each other very well. He has no idea that both their family and his are in terrible danger. Winner of the 2008 Christopher Award. Library edition with trade jacket added.
Summary Jared’s mother is always embracing causes, and he can’t believe it when she agrees to host an African refugee family until the church committee can find them affordable housing. While Jared is reluctant to share his room and his life with a stranger, his annoying sister Mopsy is percolating with excitement about making new friends. When the family arrives, they are not at all what Jared had expected. Mr. and Mrs. Amabo never seem to interact with their children, Mattu has a much different accent than his parents, and Alake doesn’t speak at all. Jared thinks something isn’t right, but his parents won’t listen to him. Still, he eventually comes to like the Amabos and even feels a bit protective of them. Then he accidentally discovers a strange-looking rock in the box Mattu has brought from Africa. Jared begins to piece things together…without realizing that a terrible danger looms over both families.
