As rumors of civil war circulate in Ngala, Chanda travels to her extended family's village, hoping to reconcile with them. Chanda's family welcomes her and her younger brother and sister, but soon they demand she marry a surly (if somewhat charming) tracker named Nelson. Chanda refuses and prepares to leave town. Before she can flee, the brutal guerrilla General Mandikiattacks and kidnaps all the children, including Chanda's siblings. Now Chanda and Nelson must join together to try to save what remains of their families. Author's note.
Summary Since the death of her mother from AIDS, Chanda has been trying her best to care for her siblings, five-year-old Soly and six-year-old Iris, working as a substitute teacher and relying on help from friends and neighbors in Bonang. Chanda is upset with her maternal grandparents and relatives, who left her mother to die alone in the bush. When Granny calls and pleads for her to visit Tiro, their ancestral village, Chanda decides it’s time to make peace. Once she and her siblings arrive, things go smoothly until Granny announces that they have arranged for her to marry Nelson, a neighbor’s son. Surprised and overwhelmed, Chanda angrily refuses and is shunned by her relatives. She plans to return home immediately, but before she can leave, Tiro is attacked by General Mandiki, a ruthless rebel leader who kidnaps her siblings and forces them to be soldiers in his army. Summoning all her courage, Chanda, joined by Nelson, vows to save Soly and Iris.
