In 1816, in a green Kentucky valley lived seven-year-old Abraham Lincoln and his dear friend, ten-year-old Austin Gollaher. One day they went out together in search of partridges. They came to the banks of the swollen Knob Creek. Though Austin thought better of crossing the rushing waters, Abe-"not a great leader yet"-pointed to the partridges on the other side and said, "Let's go." Austin got across without incident, but Abraham fell in. Luckily for the future of the country, Austin was there to pull him out. Full-color watercolor and pen-and-ink illustrations. Author's note.
